Questions to Ask Yourself Before Choosing a College Soccer Program

Choosing a college soccer program is one of the biggest decisions you'll make as a player. It's easy to compare schools based on rankings, conferences, facilities, or social media, but none of those things can tell you whether a school is the right fit for you. The right decision looks different for every player, which is why taking the time to understand what's important to you is such an important part of the process.

1. Will this environment challenge me?

It’s easy to look for the place where you’ll be the star or where playing time seems easiest to earn. We actually think one of the best things you can do is find an environment that stretches you. I chose UCF because I knew I’d be surrounded by ambitious players and coaches who would push me every day. Growth isn’t always comfortable, but it’s usually where the biggest development happens.

2. Does this culture bring out the best in me?

The people you’re around every day matter. Are your teammates supportive? Are the standards high? Does everyone genuinely want to improve? Coaches can change throughout your college career, but a strong culture often lasts much longer. That’s something worth paying attention to.

3. What kind of player do I want to become?

Do you want to play in a possession-based system? A direct system? A high-pressing team? Different programs develop different types of players. Think beyond where you’ll play and ask yourself who you’ll become over the next four years.

4. Am I chasing a name or choosing the right fit?

It’s easy to get excited by a Power Four logo or a nationally known program. Those opportunities are incredible, but don’t let the name make the decision for you. The right fit is the place that helps you grow, enjoy your experience, and become the best version of yourself.

5. Am I asking enough questions?

Ask the coaches.

Ask the players.

Ask yourself.

  • What does a typical week look like?

  • How do freshmen typically develop?

  • What support is available academically?

  • What’s expected outside of soccer?

  • What does leadership look like here?

The more questions you ask, the more confident you’ll feel in your decision.

6. Can I picture myself here?

This one is hard to explain, but it’s real.

When I visited UCF, it felt right. I loved the campus, the atmosphere, and the culture. Tyler and I both had incredible college experiences, and neither of us transferred or even thought about transferring. That’s not because every day was perfect. It’s because we chose schools that aligned with who we were and what we wanted from the experience.

Recruiting isn’t about finding the “best” school. It’s about finding the place that’s best for you. You’re making one of the biggest decisions of your soccer career. TAKE YOUR TIME, ask good questions, and remember that you’re choosing much more than a logo. You’re choosing the environment that’s going to shape you over the next four years.

Finding the right fit isn't always easy, and you don't have to figure it out by yourself.
